Abrar Fahad, a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was beaten to death allegedly by activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at a BUET residential hall on Monday. Abrar was a second-year student of BUET's Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE). Abrar's father filed a case with the Chawk Bazar Police Station against 19 students including the general secretary of BUET BCL unit. Krishna Pada Roy, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Crime) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), talking to journalists on BUET campus on Monday stated, "We have detained nine BUET students over Abrar murder," Police are trying to nab the rest of the suspects, the DMP official said. Earlier DMP official Abdul Baten told the media that six students linked to the murder have been identified from CCTV footage. Sohrab Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Chawk Bazar Police Station told the Daily Observer that out of nine detained four BCL leaders, Mehedy Hasan Russel, Fuad Hossain, Anik Sarker and Meftahul Islam Zion, have been taken into police custody for interrogation. Anik and Zion were detained after video footage revealed their links, he added. Abrar was bludgeoned with blunt objects, said Dr Sohel Mahmud, Head of the Forensic Department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after autopsy. "There were multiple injury marks on his body and internal bleeding caused his death," he said. Classmates of Abrar claimed that BCL activists beat him to death targeting him as a member of the Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. His death has triggered protests on the BUET and Dhaka University and other campuses across the country. Social media users have expressed their indignation at the death of the BUET student. A resident of Sher-e-Bangla Hall, Abrar was called up from his room at 7:30pm on Sunday, said police, quoting the students of the Hall. Later, his body was found on the first-floor stairway of the Hall at 2:00am. According to Sher-e-Bangla Hall students, some followers of BUET BCL unit's general secretary Russell beat Abrar inside Room No. 2011 on Sunday night. Three residents of room 2011 went into hiding after Abrar had been beaten to death. The absconding three are Amit Saha, BUET BCL unit's deputy legal affairs secretary and student of Civil Engineering Department, Mujtaba Rafid, deputy office secretary and student of Chemical Engineering Department and Iftee Mosharraf Shokal, deputy social affairs secretary and student of Biomedical Engineering Department. The fourth resident of the room went to his village two days ago. Ashikul Islam Bitu, assistant secretary of Chhatra League (BUET Unit) said, "Abrar was called from Room No 1011 of the Hall and taken to Room No 2011 at 8:00pm on Sunday on suspicion that he was a Shibir activist. We checked his Facebook and messenger and found evidence that he follows and likes some controversial pages. Evidence of his association with Shibir was also found." "He was questioned by BCL deputy office secretary of BUET Unit, also a third-year student of Chemical Engineering Department Mujtaba Rafid, deputy social secretary Iftee Mosharraf Shokal and deputy law secretary Amit Shaha," Bitu said. After getting some proof of his involvement with Shibir, some students of fourth-year were asked to come into the room, the BCL leader added. The body of Abrar was taken to Kushtia on Monday night. Abrar's mother Rokeya Khatun said in tears that her son Abrar, a meritorious student of BUET, had no affiliation with Shibir. "My son never became second in any examination. He got chance wherever he applied including Dhaka University for higher education," Rokeya Khatun said. He had a long-cherished dream to become an acclaimed engineer since his childhood, Abrar worked very hard and finally got admitted to BUET, the mother said. Meanwhile, Abdullah Al Mamun, a classmate of Abrar, said that he was killed due to his status on social media platform Facebook regarding the recent instruments Bangladesh signed with India. Abrar was a very open-minded and progressive boy. He did attend Tablig and went there two or three times since getting admitted to the BUET. He reiterated that his family is a supporter of the ruling party. His classmate echoed the same and said he wasn't involved with politics of any kind.
