9 prisoners released from Bogura jail

Nine prisoners were released from Bogura District Jail as social distance cannot be maintained inside the jail due to the number of prisoners which is three times beyond its capacity.

Jailer Shariful Islam said the prison has capacity of 720 prisoners. But, there are 2200 prisoners are now in the jail. Under this circumstances, social distance cannot followed.

A list of 159 prisoners was sent to the Prison Directorate in Dhaka requesting to release them pardoning their punishment.

Later, the directorate ordered to release nine of them. Most of the released prisoners were accused in theft and drug cases and were sentenced to six months to one year.

Rest of the listed prisoners will be released gradually, he added.

Earlier, the home ministry took decision to release short-term imprisoned convicts amid coronavirus outbreak.
