SIRAJGANJ, June 11: Ahead of the rainy season, Chauhali Upazila of the district started experiencing erosion by the Jamuna River.
Road, houses, and other installations in south Chauhali are getting bedded into the Jamuna due to the unabated erosion. At least five villages and four education institutions in Khaspukuria and Bagutia unions are under the erosion threat.
Local representatives on Sunday said with the rising tide in the mighty river, the erosion is stretching across 4.5 km ranging from Janata High School of Chauhali Upazila Sadar to Charbinunai-Bhuter crossing of Bagutia Union via Khaspukuria Union.
In the span of last four weeks, more than 100 houses, seven weaving factories,  three religious institutes and one and a half kilo roads were damaged in south Khaspukuria, Mituani, Rehai Pukuria and Charbinunai.
Yet there is no measure to tackle the erosion. Panic is looming large among the local people.
Khaspukuria Union Chairman Abdul Majid Sarkar said the erosion devoured at least 20-25 houses of Khaspukuria and Metuani villages at his union. Locals are passing sleepless nights in fear of erosion. He laid emphasis on immediate protection of the erosion.
Baghutia Union Chairman Abdul Kahar Siddiqui said more than 100 houses of Rehai Pukuria, Char Nakalia, Charbinanui and Charsalimabad villages and three religious institutions were embedded in the last one month. In addition, one and a half kilometres of the metalised main road connecting the Upazila Sadar have received sliding down. If no emergency measure to resist the erosion, thousands of homes, roads, culverts, bridges, education and religious institutions are feared to be missing. He strongly demanded of the authorities concerned to take erosion protection measures immediately.
Chauhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UN) Dewan Moudud Ahmed said the erosion appeared in the locality at the beginning of May. He added the water development board officials have been briefed in detail about taking measures to tackle it.
Executive Engineer of Tangail Water Development Board and In-charge of Chauhali Upazila Sirajul Islam said the flooded area has been inspected. To phase out the erosion permanently, a project for river bank protection dyke is awaiting approval, he disclosed.
"Following approval of the project, it will be possible to stop erosion by implementing it rapidly," he added.
To tackle any severe erosion there are emergency arrangements including dumping of sand sacks, he assured.
