Narayanganj mosque explosion

Death toll climbs to 14; Probe bodies formed

Fourteen people, including a child and a Muazzin, have, so far, died from Friday's airconditioners explosion incident inside a mosque at Khanpur Tolla area in Narayanganj city.

Confirming the matter on Saturday afternoon, Dr Samanta Lal Sen, coordinator of Sheikh Hasina Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, said, "The condition of 23 burn patients are critical. All of the injured have burnt their respiratory tracts."

The deceased were identified as Jewel, 7, Md Delwar, 48, Muazzin of the mosque, Md Jamal, 40, Sabbir, 18, Jubayer, 18, Humayun Kabir, 70, Kuddus Bepari, 70, Md Ibrahim, 42, Mostafa Kamal, 34, Rifat, 18, Junayed, 28, Rassel, 34, Jaynal and Mainuddin, 12.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence, state gas transmission and distribution agency Titas and the district administration of Narayanganj each formed a committee to investigate the explosions.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep grief over the loss of lives in this tragic incident and directed to give maximum care to the victims.

The anxious family members and friends of the injured were seen waiting restlessly outside the hospital. They wanted to know if their relatives are still alive.

More than 40 devotees received multiple burn injuries as gas leakage triggered an explosion and six airconditioners inside Baitus Salam Jame Mosque exploded during Esha payers on Friday.

Thirty-seven of the injured were admitted to the Sheikh Hasina Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute while the rest were to Victoria Hospital in Narayanganj city.
