Four of a family -- mother and her two sons who studied at  the North South University (NSU) and one daughter-in-law-- have been missing since they left Dhaka for Syria one and half years ago, a senior police officer said on Monday.
They were last known to be flying to Yemen, said officials of the Kalabaghan police station. They did not come back and police now believe they might have got involved in militancy. The missing persons have been identified as Panna Sharif, her two sons Mohiuddin Sharif Rezoan Sharif and Mohiuddin Sharif's wife Tasnuva Haidar.
They were living at 115 Crescent Road under Kalabaghan police station in the capital. Mohiuddin and Rezoan passed BBA from NSU after completing O and A level from Dhanmondi  Scholastica  School.
The North South University (NSU) -- one of the country's premier private universities located in Dhaka-has been put under the police scanner since Bangladesh's worst terror attack at a Spanish bakery and restaurant in the uptown Gulshan diplomatic enclave in the capital on July 1.
After investigation police found they are living either in Syria or in Yemen and involved in militancy.   The family members flew for Yemen to met with Anwar al-Awlaki, a leader of the Al Qaeda affiliate in Yemen. But it is yet to be confirmed if they could meet with Anwar al-Awlaki. Kazi Mosaien Sharif husband of Panna Sharif died at the age of 68 in 2013.
Rezon Sharif also has two children but his wife divorced him as he got involved in militancy, said the caretaker of the building. Panna has two flats of the building and rented out those for Tk 42 thousand per month. The caretaker gives Tk 20,000 per month to the Rezoan's ex-wife and their children.
Police said Panna Sharif and his family members left for Turkey to join Jihad. Police suspect they might be involved in militancy and have started investigation into their mysterious disappearance, a police source said. Kazi Mosaien Sharif was religious minded and serious follower of Anwar al-Awlaki, said Milion.
Police came to know that all the family members used to read books written by  Anwar al-Awlaki, he added.  At least six of the terrorists were identified as former students of NSU who also went missing for a year or more.
Yasir Arafat officer-in-charge (OC) of Kalabaghan Police Station said nobody filed a general diary with this police station over their disappearance.
Several of the attackers, who are from affluent families and had gone to reputed schools at home and abroad, have been missing from their homes.
Terror group Islamic State (IS) claimed credit for the Gulshan café attack. Military commandos later stormed the café and killed 'six attackers' and captured one alleged attacker. But none has claimed responsibility for the Sholakia attack on the Eid Day.  Two police officers and a woman from a nearby home were killed in this attack. Police later shot dead one alleged attacker.
