Salahuddin Mamun brings good news for business arena in our country.  He has started the commercial production of Swiss albino mouse and is gaining profits day by day. The idea of producing the mouse is new in type of business.

Mamun, a lab assistant of Rajshahi University’s Zoology department, first bought four pups of albino mouse from the university as hobby; and started nursing those at his home at Sameshardipur village under Katakhali municipality. He got inspired to produce this animal in commercial purpose two months later after being profited from it.

He now owns 120 mice and demand of this mouse is high for research work.

About beginning of the business Mamun said, “A PhD researcher of Botany department asked him to release four pups of Swiss albino at the end of 2017.  I took those pups at home instead of releasing and began to nurse them in shoe boxes.”

“Nearly a month later a mouse gave birth to 10 pups and more 10 after a week,” he added.

Mamun first earned Tk 1,000 by selling 20 mice of this species to a German researcher who  works on taxidermy. About the first profit, he said, “I received an order from a German researcher for the first time. But I could not agree to sell mouse considering the loss of live of that animal. Later, I agreed when museum curator cleared me about the purpose of mouse research. I sold 20 mice to him."

It was the beginning of my business, he added.

There are now 100 female mice and 20 male mice in Mamun’s firm. Each female mouse gives birth to 8-10 pups one to one-and-a-half month.

Private university laboratories and pharmaceutical companies from Dhaka and Rajshahi are buying mice from his firm.

Recently a renowned company collected 50 mice from the firm, said Mamun.

Professor Abu Reza of Genetic Engineering department at Rajshahi University said there are few similarities of gene between human and mouse and this is one of the reason for increasing the mouse's demand in research.
