Matamuhuri eroding Chakaria again

Riverbank protection work halted for want of money

COX'S BAZAR, Aug 12: The turbulent Matamuhuri is eroding Chakaria upazila again as more than one riverbank protection works initiated by Water Development Board (WDB) have remained stopped for several months for want of money.
Local representatives raised the matter to WDB authority on several occasions but there was no response. As a result, several hundred riverside houses have completely been eroded.
Thousands of people at Surajpur under Surajpur-Manikpur union; Kakara Sadar, Lotny and Majherfari under Kakara union; Hazian, Ghunia and Digor Pankhali under Fasiakhali union; Mondalpara, Jaliapara and Shikalghat under Lakhyarchar union; Dikkul and Khojakhali under Koiarbeel union; Batakhali under Saharbeel union; Betua Bazaar under BMChar union; Anispara under Purba Boro Bhewla union; Moronghona, Puroityakhali and Konyarkum under Konakhali union; and Sawdagor Ghona and Machhghat under Chiringa union of Chakari upazila; and Kazirpara, Amanpara, Abdul Bari Para, Charpara, Namar Chiringa and Kochpara under no. 1 ward of Chakaria Municipality have been passing days amid panic.
Besides, the Matamuhuri Bridge is also under threat.
Local sources said, Matamuhuri is eroding fast at Digor Pankhali area of Fasiakhali union under the upazila.
Officer of Digor Pankhali Khetrapal Mandir Shibu Dhar said, "The 100-year old temple, located beside the river, is also under threat as soil has disappeared from its base following onrush of water from the uphill and constant erosion by the river." He demanded immediate steps to save the temple from extinction.
Chairman of Surajpur-Manikpur UP Azimul Haque said, "Due to unplanned tree felling and lifting of stone from the adjacent hills by blasting bombs, onrush of water from the uphill inundates the plain lands beside the hills in each rainy season. With the water comes loamy soil which has led to the creation of numerous shoals at more than one points of the river. As a result, the river loses navigability and the erosion starts with devastating effects."
Chairman of Lakhyarchar UP Golam Mostofa Kaisar said, "Due to the Matamuhuri erosion, an electric pole with a 33,000 volt capacity electric line of the Power Development Board (PDB) is under serious threat. If the pole is destroyed, power supply between Cox's Bazar and Chittagong will get snapped anytime."
Chairman of BMChar UP SM Jahangir Alam said, "An old mosque at Betua Bazaar area of the union may go into the river anytime. It is necessary to check erosion by protecting the riverbanks."
Chairman of Konakhali UP Didarul Haque Sikder said, "300 metres of an embankment at Morong Ghona near the UP has been eroded. At least 20 houses have gone into the river and the UP ground has also been inundated. Due to the damage in the base soil, the UP building is also under threat of erosion."
Meanwhile, Executive Engineer of Cox's Bazar WDB Md Sobibur Rahman said, "A tender of Tk 19.34 crore has been floated to repair the 33-km part of the embankment. The repair work will start in the current month."
