Petrobangla wants to cash Tk 8,000cr from public pocket?

Only to adjust TK 840 crore in the balance sheet, the state owned Petrobangla wants to cash Tk 8,000 crore from the public pockets through increasing gas price by 94.89 per cent on an average.
The General Manager of Petrobangla spelt out the planned price hike on the final day of public hearing on gas price hike at Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) on Thursday where the BERC full panel, energy experts, stakeholders' community leaders and CAB representatives were present.
"We need TK 840 crore to pay the bills of international oil companies (IOCs) for purchasing gas from their fields. However, we have only one mechanism in our hand and that is submission of a price hike plea to the BERC and accordingly we did that," the official said. This amount is only 3 per cent of the total balance sheet of Petrobangla.
Questions arise that if Petrobangla needs Tk 840 crore, why the people will pay Tk 8,000 crore?
"As petrobangla needs to pay Tk 7160 crore to the National Board of Revenue (NBR), as it pays all SD and VAT on behalf of the  IOCs," the GM Petrobangla told the final session of the public hearing.
The NBR imposes 95.51 per cent tax on IOCs and the Petrobangla pays TK 16,660 crore as gas bills for purchasing 15,447 mmcfd gas. It also pays Tk 3,1526 crore as SD and VAT to the NBR.
"The main reason for price hike is to pay the SD and VAT which is huge is on Petrobangla's  shoulders. So, they just pass on the matter on distributing agencies and thus the BERC has conducted the unjustified hearing on the proposal," Dr. Professor Shamsul Alam, an energy expert, told the Daily Observer.
Not only that the Petrobangla has FDR of Tk 2,700 crore, which is solely public money. Even then, the organisation tries to pass  the burden on people's shoulders?
