NATORE, Oct 3: The commercial cultivation of Colombo lemon, a variety of lemon, has started here for the first time. Around one year ago, some farmers of the district experimentally cultivated the lemon and found bright economic prospect in it. Now, many farmers are getting interested in its cultivation.
A source at the local Horticulture Centre said, the Colombo lemon grows naturally in Sylhet region and hilly areas of the country. This lemon gives fruit the whole year. It is very tasty and has nice flavour.
The source further said, Alfazul Alam and Salim Reza, two guava cultivators of Natore Sadar upazila and Atiqur Rahaman of Senbhag Laxmikole village of the same upazila, experimentally cultivated the lemon at their own lands one and a half year ago and got good output. Later, they started its commercial cultivation instead of guava cultivation at their lands.
Farmer Atiqur Rahman said, "I first saw this variety of lemon in Narsingdi district when I went there on a visit around one and a half year ago. Later, I collected the saplings and began its cultivation on my 10-bigha land. I got more profit than guava."
He further said, "This year I supplied five maunds of Colombo lemon to UK through a trader of Narsingdi district. At present, I am selling per piece lemon at Tk 10 in the market."
Another lemon farmer Alfazul Alam said, "Colombo lemon is mainly cultivated for exporting abroad. Due to less familiarity and marketing, its demand has not increased as per expectation in the country. In the primary stage, it fetched good profit but later the exporters stopped buying the lemon on different excuses. But, still it has a great economic potential."
On the other hand, lemon cultivator Salim Reza echoed the same words like Alfazul Alam. Seeing its bright future, he is now thinking about increasing its cultivation, Salim added.
Sunil Kumar, a labourer at a Colombo lemon garden said, "Working at the orchard of this lemon does not require much labour. Besides, there is less attack of pests."
Meanwhile, the officials of the local Horticulture Centre are giving necessary advices to the growers.
Meftahul Bari, deputy director of Natore Horticulture Centre said, the Colombo lemon has great demand in the UK and Middle East countries.
He expected that the farmers would get handsome profit through cultivating this lemon. He also urged the farmers to take necessary technical advices from the agriculture department in this connection.
