MEHERPUR, Oct 11: Despite optimum production of arum, farmers of the district are not happy owing to sharp fall in prices of the vegetable in local markets.
Now they are in an anxiety of incurring huge losses, and for that reason, they have not harvested one-third of their produce yet. This year farmers brought more lands under the cultivation because of optimal output and high profit of the vegetable last year, sources said.
According to official sources of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), farmers of the district used to bring nearly 4000 hectares of land under vegetable cultivation throughout the year, and they cultivated arum on 800 hectares of land last year and earned handsome amount.  That's why, they brought nearly 1000 hectares of land under the cultivation this current season.
Sohrab Hossain, arum grower of Ujalpur village under Sadar upazila said that he had brought five bighas of land under arum cultivation spending Tk 15 thousand per bigha land. Now he is going to face losses.
He will get 60 maunds of arum from per bigha of land, and its present market price is not more than Tk 15 thousand before harvesting from the land.  As the other expenses like labour charges for collecting arum, carrying and marketing will not be recovered after selling the produce, he is showing reluctance to harvest the same.
He also said that there are many growers who have cultivated arum on 8 to 10 bighas of land by taking lease, are also not interested to harvest the same from the land due to low prices.
Habibur Rahman, a cultivator of village Dhola under Gangni upazila cultivated arum on 10 bighas of land and meanwhile he sold out his arum of 6 bighas two months back and made good profit. He is now not collecting arum of the rest four bighas due to sharp fall in market prices.
Shafi of village Maniknagar under Mujibnagar upazila said that he had cultivated arum on his two bighas of land by spending Tk 40 thousand.  A month ago, he sold out arum of one bigha and earned net profit of Tk 30 thousand. He kept one bigha unattended expecting more profit, but he has sold the same at Tk 15 thousand only.  Now arum is being sold at Tk 250 per maund in the market here, he added.
Sadar Upazila Agricultural Officer AKM Kamruzzaman said that the arum of the district is better than that of other districts which is familiar as Meherchondi variety.   Like previous years, growers have achieved bumper production this season, but most of them are not harvesting their produce from the land fearing enormous losses, he added.
