PBI chief Banaj Kumar Mazumder and former SP Babul Akhter
Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) chief Banaj Kumar Mazumder has filed a case against four people including Babul Akhter and expatriate journalist Ilyas Hossain under the Digital Security Act and Special Powers Act.
Banaj Kumar Mazumder, also the Additional Inspector General of Police (IGP), filed the case for citing and spreading false and untrue information in Mitu murder case.
Two other accused of the case are Babul Akhter's brother Md Habibur Rahman Labu, 45, and Babul Akhter's father Md Abdul Wadud Mia, 72.
The case was filed at the Dhanmondi Police Station in the capital.
PBI chief Banaj Kumar Mazumder himself confimed the mass media about filing the case on Tuesday (Sept 27) night.
Banaj Kumar Mazumder said the charges of spreading false and baseless information in Mitu murder case, attempting to divert the Mitu murder case investigation, inciting communalism, and tarnishing PBI's image or Bangladesh Police's image were brought against the accused.
PBI SP for Dhaka Metro North Md Jahangir Alam said the case was filed
over a video content made by Iliyas and circulating in online sphere
that tarnished the image of Banaj Kumar and PBI as a unit of the police
force.
The case also included a section of the Special Powers Act
since the video tried to destroy communal harmony by presenting false
information of religious issue, said Jahangir.
Babul Akhter, now in jail in the case he filed over the murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu in 2016, on September 8 sued six officials of the Police Bureau of Investigation, including its chief Banaj Kumar Mazumder, for custodial torture.
The other accused are PBI Chattogram district SP Nazmul Hasan, Chattogram Metropolitan SP Naima Sultana, PBI former inspector Santosh Kumar Chakma, AKM Mohiuddin Selim and inspector Kazi Enayet Kabir.
Babul complained in the case statement that he was tortured by the accused while he was in PBI custody from May 10-17, 2021.
A court in Chattogram rejected Babul Akhter's appeal to file a case against
six police officials including Banaj Kumar Mazumder. Chattogram
Metropolitan Sessions Judge Dr Begum Badrunnesa rejected the appeal
after the hearing.
Mitu was stabbed and shot to death on June 5, 2016 when she was walking her son to his school bus at the Port City’s GEC crossing.
Babul Akhter filed a case accusing unidentified persons after the murder.
The PBI submitted the final report on May 12, 2021, in the case filed by Babul Akter in 2016, mentioning Babul as the ‘mastermind’ of the murder as the investigators claimed to have found his involvement in Mitu murder after five years of investigation.
Mitu's father, Mosharraf Hossain, filed a fresh case on May 12, 2021, over the murder, making Babul Akhter as the prime accused.
