Negotiations on power tariff with Adani today

Published : Thursday, 27 October, 2016 at 12:00 AM
Officials of the Power Division will sit with representatives of the Indian business conglomerate, Adani Power Ltd, today (Thursday) to settle the power tariff issue through negotiation.
Power Division Secretary will lead the negotiation at its board room to discuss the present scenario of power purchase from Indian, according to officials.
On August 15 in 2015, the government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian firm to import electricity. After signing the MoU Adani Power Ltd offered Tk 6.85 per unit as tariff for exporting electricity from its proposed plant in Jharkhand.
As per the proposal Adani said they would invest US$2.1billion to set up the proposed power plant in Jharkhand to export 1,600 MW of electricity to Bangladesh for a 25-year term.
The Ministry has already received policy level decision from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) to settle the tariff issue under the Speedy Supply of Power and Energy Act.
"We are importing 100 megawatts of electricity from Tripura at Tk 6.45 per unit under  no-electricity no-pay basis. But that was gas-based and state-to-state deal, however, this one is coal based and we will get it from the private sector so there would be some changes. But our interest is to make it close to the Reliance's proposal," a senior official said.
Another Indian power giant Reliance Power Ltd had sought between Tk 7.99 and Tk 8.22 per unit tariff for electricity supplied from a mega power project to be installed in Bangladesh.
Adani's proposal is not in place. They are planning to install the plant. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister's Office asked Adani to collect the 'No Objection Certificate' from the concerned Indian agencies to export the electricity to Bangladesh. Adani Group in its latest offer said, "We confirm that upon issuance of Letter of Award (LoA) in our favour, we shall submit the security of a suitable amount as decided mutually."
