A Brahmanbaria court sentenced 13 people to four years imprisonment in a case filed over vandalising temples and for carrying out arson attacks in Nasirnagar of Brahmanbaria in 2016.
Chief Judicial Magistrate of Brahmanbaria Mohammad Masud Parvez passed the verdict on Thursday afternoon, said Court Inspector Didarul Alam. The court also fined the convicts Tk 2,000 each.
The convicts are-- Dewan Atiqur Rahman Ankhi, former chairman of Haripur Union Parishad, Idhu Mia, Mofizul Haque, Nazir Rahman, Md Mafuz Miah, Saiham Rabbi Shyam, Mukhles Mia, Mir Kashem, Tabarok Reza, Anis Miah, Khasru Miah, Sheikh Abdul Ahad and Sajib Chowdhury, all of them are residents of different areas of Nasirnagar Upazila. Among them, five convicts are now absconding.
According to prosecution documents, some 15 temples and 50 houses of Hindu community were vandalized centering the alleged Facebook post of one Rasaraj Das of Haripur union of the upazila 'denigrating Islam’ on October 30, 2016.
Total eight cases were filed with the Nasirnagar Police Station in this connection.
Verdict of one the cases was delivered on Thursday.
