The identities of 10 people, whose bodies were found inside a trawler floating off Nazirertek Beach in Cox's Bazar on Sunday, have been confirmed by their relatives.
The deceased are-- trawler owner Shamsul Alam, 23, Saiful Islam, 18, Sawkat Ullah, 18, Osman Gani, 17, Saifullah, 23, Parvez Mosharraf, 14, and Nurul Kabir, 28, Saiful Islam, 34, Mohammad Shahjahan, 35, and Tarique Zia, 25.
Cox's Bazar Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mahfuzul Islam said that the relatives and family members of the deceased fishermen came to the Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue and claimed to identify the 10 bodies.
He, however, said police have been working to reconfirm it. The bodies will be handed over to them after legal procedures are completed, he said. The trawler had been missing for nearly two weeks.
Mohammad Mir Kashem, chairman of Hoanak union parishad of Maheshkhali upazila, said he was informed that a medium-sized fishing trawler owned by Shamsul Alam left for deep sea for fishing on April 7 and few days later, the relatives of some of the fishermen of the trawler contacted him and said that there was no information about the trawler and the fishermen.
He then requested the relatives of the fishermen to inform the police about the matter.
Meanwhile, ten bodies were found on a fishing trawler that locals pulled ashore in Nazirartek area of Cox's Bazar on Sunday. Fire service and police recovered the bodies in the afternoon.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Cox's Bazar Sadar Police Station Rafiqul Islam said they suspected that a gang of robbers might have attacked the trawler at least 10 to 12 days ago.
He said the bodies were found inside the cold storage of the fishing trawler and all the victims had their hands and feet tied.
