Zayeda leading by 10,375 votes over Azmat in 250 centres

Former mayor Jahangir Alam’s mother and independent candidate Zayeda Khatun is leading the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election.

According to the results received from 250, out of 480 centers, on Thursday night, Independent candidate Zayeda Khatun  with 'Table Clock' election symbol bagged 1,28,600 votes while her nearest rival Azmat Ullah Khan received 1,18,225 votes with ‘Boat’ symbol.

It means, Zayeda is leading by 10,375 votes against Azmat in the results received from 250 centres.

Returning Officer Md Faridul Islam announced the results at Banga Taj Auditorium at Gazipur Zila Parishad Bhaban till 11.30pm. Former mayor Jahangir Alam has been staying at the auditorium since the announcement of the results coming from different polling centres in the districts.

However, 'Boat' candidate Azmat Ullah Khan did not come to the auditorium.

Meanwhile, the Election Commissioner Md Alamgir said a total of 50 per cent voters cast their votes in the election.


The GCC election was smoothly conducted for the third time on Thursday.

The Gazipur City Corporation, constituted with a total of 59 wards, has some 11,794,76 voters. Of them, 5,92,762 are male voters, 5,86,696 are female voters and the rest 18 are hijras.

Total eight candidates vied for the mayoral position and 325 contenders ran for councillors' posts across 57 wards and 11 reserved seats.

The voting began at 8.00am using the electronic voting machines (EVMs) at 480 polling centers under the 59 wards which ended at 4.00pm.

Members of the law enforcement agencies were deployed at all the polling centers.
