335 vehicles under custody getting damaged in Natore

NATORE, Nov 7: Around 335 vehicles of different categories worth crores of taka, which were seized by local police stations at different times here due to various irregularities, are getting damaged under custody.
But, the matter was not solved timely because of sluggishness of the competent authorities and complexities of law, leading both the law enforcers and the vehicle owners to complication.
The seized vehicles are mostly motorbikes, private cars, microbuses and trucks.
The quarters concerned said, the seized vehicles are lying under the open sky for year after year due to no solution in this connection, and at present most of those have got damaged.
On the other hand, the number of new vehicles under police custody is also increasing day by day. As a result, the court and police stations are facing trouble.
Sources in Natore court and police stations said, at least 335 vehicles have been lying abandoned on the compounds of seven police stations, highway police stations and different courts of the district for long.
Of those, 150 vehicles are currently lying abandoned on court compound, 90 at Sadar Police Station, 20 at Lalpur Police Station, 20 at Gurudaspur Police Station, 25 at Baraigram Police Station, seven at Bagatipara Police Station, four at Naldanga Police Station, 12 at Singra Police Station, one at Jhalmalia Highway Police Station, and six at Bonpara Investigation Centre. Of the seized vehicles, most are motorbikes.
Md. Abu Bakar Siddique, Natore court inspector said, "Most of the seized vehicles were used in different crimes such as stealing, snatching, robbery and narcotics carrying. Besides, some of those have been seized after accidents while some for having fake documents. The vehicles have been kept under custody as evidences and documents for lawsuit."
Seeking anonymity, a resident of Boroharishpur area in Natore town said, he was granted bail but he is yet to get back his motorbike.
Shariful Islam of Bagatipara upazila said, he and many others have left their hopes of getting back their vehicles as they did not have valid documents. They, however, suggested the authority concerned to issue release order of those vehicles after declaring those as state property.
Advocate Shusanta Kumar Ghosh, president of Natore District Bar Association, advised the officials to sell the seized vehicles in auction before those get damaged and to deposit the money in the government fund.
Md. Sirajul Islam, public prosecutor of Natore Judge Court said, the court grants bail quickly in this connection if a person can show legal papers to the court. There is no possibility of harassment, he added.
He further said, he would inform the concerned authority to take necessary steps to save the vehicles from getting damaged.
