News of meeting with Japa secretary general in Singapore is a dirtiness: Fakhrul

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir termed the news of meeting with Jatiya Party (Japa) secretary general Md Mujibul Haque Chunnu as dirtiness.

He made this comment in response to questions from reporters at the Hazrat Shahjalal (R) International Airport in the capital on Saturday evening after returning home from treatment in Singapore.

Some news media in Dhaka including social media reported that Mirza Fakrul held a secret meeting with Japa secretary general Md Mujibul Haque Chunnu in Singapore.

Journalists at the airport wanted to know about this from Mirza Fakhrul. In response, Fakhrul said, "I do not want to talk about that. These are beyond my taste."

Fakhrul then said it is a matter of sorrow that this government has created such a society, such a world here, in which there is nothing but dirtiness.

"It is a very sad thing that all the dirty words are spread involving us where politicians like us who were in the struggle of the liberation war, and who are now involved in the democratic struggle. And unfortunately it spreads in mass media and social media. I think it is a matter of shame to give response to it," he said.

BNP secretary general also told reporters about the harassment at the airport while traveling abroad. He said, "I came by flying for about four hours from Singapore. I had to face all the tactics of the government to harass us, here too. Those who hold opposition party like us, all have to face such harassment at the immigration. It has become a part of life. I went for treatment, but I still had to face that."

Mirza Fakhrul returned home nine days after treatment in Singapore. He went there with his wife Rahat Ara Begum on August 24 last. They received treatment at the National University Hospital in Singapore. A few years ago, Mirza Fakhrul was diagnosed with a block in the internal carotid artery of his neck. He also had complications in the blood circulation in the arteries of his neck. Apart from this, Fakhrul had some physical complications too. He has to go to that hospital for medical follow-up.
