COX'S BAZAR, Nov 19: Farmers under Chakoria upazila of the district are now in complete disarray as particular varieties of brinjal and chilli seeds they bought from local shops did not grow well in the current season.
Plants of chilli and brinjal on most of the vegetable lands here in the upazila are dying due to adultareted seeds; as a result, hundreds of farmers are going to suffer heavy losses this season, according to field sources.
Farmers alleged a section of unscrupulous traders packaged low-quality vegetable seeds under the label of well-known brands of high yielding and hybrid varieties and sold those fake seeds to them at high prices.
Though the traders have no licence or any permission to package and market the seed, they are making publicity saying that the seeds which are in the packets have approved by the BSTI for sale, they added.
They were cheated with fake seeds. Thus, the syndicate of fake seed providers is earning a lot of money, farmers complained.
Traders under the name of different brands sold brinjal and chilli seeds particularly to the farmers of Halkakara Moulvi Char and Purba Char under the upazila at higher prices, the sources said.
Farmer Mohammad Ibrahim of Halkakara Sawdagor Para village said that he cultivated Greenboy and Greenball varities of brinjal and chilli seeds of Super Agro Brand on three kanis of land, but the poor quality seeds did not grow well.
Now it is impossible to get even production cost after selling the produce at markets. He is suffering a loss of around Tk two lakh this season, he added.
Many farmers including Rostom Ali, Bablu, and Belal Uddin have suffered immense losses of around Tk 1 crore due to the adulterated seeds.
They alleged that they are not getting expected production of their vegetables as they were cheated after buying adulterated seeds under different brands including Super Agro Company from traders.
Farmers demanded the local administration to take actions against the sub-standard seed traders and they also urged to manage compensation for them for the losses they suffered.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Atik Ullah said they have not got any complaint from the farmers about illegal trading of adulterated seeds. They would take necessary actions after getting written compliant in this regard, he added.
Upazila Nirbahi Offcier Md Shadul Islam said they will take legal action against the illegal traders if low quality seeds are found responsible for poor vegetable production.
