NANDIGRAM, BOGURA, Dec 23: This season mustard fields have already started blooming in Nandigram Upazila of the district.

According to field sources, bees are collecting honey from flowers of wide mustard fields. Blooming mustard fields have made localities attractive.

According to sources at the Upazila Agriculture Office, different species of mustard including BARI Mustard-14,15,17,18,20, BINA-9 and 11 have been cultivated on 7,100 hectares (ha) of land at Nandigram against the target of 9,950 ha in one municipality and five unions in the upazila.

A sudden two-day rain helped mustard plants bloom in most fields which were cultivated earlier. But damages were reported in some fields in low lands.

A farmer of Hatua Village at Sadar Union of the upazila Sushanta Kumar Shanta said, mustard farming is profitable; disease attack is less; if weather is fair, per bigha mustard production stands at 7-8 maunds; per bigha farming costs including fertiliser and medicine cost stand at Tk 8,000-9,000.

"This season I have cultivated  BARI-14 on 75 ha. Usually I farm mustard on 70-80 bighas yearly," he said.

Another farmer Krishna Chandra of Dohar Village of Buril Union said, "I farmed 3.5 bighas earlier. My fields have bloomed.

Good yielding is likely. For cultivating IRRI paddy in harvested mustard fields requires less fertiliser."

Upazila Agriculture Officer Gaziul Haq said, this Rabi Season, seeds and fertiliser were given to 5,150 farmers free of cost in Nandigram Upazila.

All types of advice are given for increasing mustard production, the official maintained.
