Four BNP leaders were arrested while distributing anti-election leaflets in Ramganj area of Lakshmipur on Thursday.
Police, however, claimed that the arrestees were accused in explosive and political violence cases.
The arrestees are Advocate Tofazzal Hossain Bachchu, the district unit BNP member secretary; Ashraf Patwari, joint convener; Zahir Raihan Babu, upazila Chhatra Dal convener, and Chhatra Dal leader Md Mamun.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ramganj police station Mohammad Saliman said that the arrestees are accused in explosives and political violence cases. They were shown arrested in these cases and will be produced in court, he added.
Meanwhile, acting convener of Lakshmipur BNP unit Advocate Hasibur Rahman said they were conducting peaceful anti-election leaflet distribution programme but the police arrested four of their leaders to implement the government's agenda.
Denying the police allegation, Hasibur said the arrested BNP leaders are not named in those cases that police had mentioned.
