A Dhaka court on Sunday fixed January 9 for hearing on the bail prayers in nine cases filed against BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir over political violence in the capital centring BNPs rally on October 28.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury set the date, after Fakhruls defence layers submitted a petition before the CMM court, Fakhruls lawyer Adv Syed Zainul Abedin Mesbah told the Daily Observer on Thursday afternoon at the court premises. After hearing the CMM fixed January 9 for the bail hearing in the presence of the accused.
The High Court directed the CMM court in Dhaka on December18 to accept, hear and dispose the bail petitions of Fakhrul in connection with the nine cases after a writ petition was filed challenging the legality of a magistrate courts refusal to accept the petitions. The cases were filed with Paltan and Ramna police stations on charges of killing a police constable, illegal gathering on the street, vandalising vehicles, rioting, snatching a police weapon, damaging properties, assaulting policemen and preventing them from discharging their duties.
Following the serious clash between BNP men and police on October 28, that left a police constable and a Jubo Dal man dead and scores of others injured the law enforcers picked up several hundred leaders and activists of the party in nationwide drives.
