Ten AL candidates Boats facing rough sea in Ctg

Apparently easy sail for 4, including 3 ministers

CHATTOGRAM, Jan 5: Some 14 Awami League nominated candidates are contesting in 16 constituencies of Chattogram district for the ensuing 12th general election on January 7. Two of the constituencies have been left for election partner, Jatiya party, candidates.

At least 10 among the 14 ruling Awami League candidates, are facing tough competition from the AL-rebel candidates who are contesting as Independent candidates. The rest four candidates including three Ministers are now in a relaxed position without any strong opposition.

They are facing very poor competition in their constituencies.

They are Information and Broadcasting Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud has been contesting from Ctg-7 (Rangunia).  Dr. Hasan Mahmud was elected MP in 2008 and 2014 and 2018 elections from Ctg-7 (Rangunia).

The Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed is contesting from Ctg-13 (Anowara) constituency on Awami League ticket. He was elected MP from the seat in by-elections held on 2012 and 2014. He was elected MP in 2018 general election on Awami League ticket. He is the son of former AL Presidium Member Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu. When his father died in 2012, he was elected MP in a by-election. He is not facing any strong opposition from the contestants in his constituency.

From Ctg-9 (Kotwali-Bakalia) constituency, Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, Deputy Minister for Education and Organising Secretary of AL and son of the former Chattogram Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury is contesting in the election.

Besides, in Ctg-6 (Raozan) ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, incumbent MP is contesting. He is also not facing any strong opposition from his opponent candidates. ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury was elected MP from Ctg-6 in 2001, 2008, 2014 and 2018 elections. He is now the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee of Railway Ministry.

Ten Awami League candidates who have been facing strong opposition are as follows. In Ctg-1 (Mirsarai) seat Mahbubur Rahman Ruhel is contesting with the Awami League symbol Boat against the Independent candidate Muhammad Giasuddin, Local AL leader and former Upazila Chairman who is contesting with Eagle symbol.

In Ctg-2 (Fatikchari) constituency Khadizatul Anwar Sony is contesting with AL symbol Boat against the Independent candidate Hussain M Abu Tayyib, a local AL leader and former upazila Chairman. In Ctg-3 (Sandwip) Mahfuzur Rahman Mita from AL and M Jamaluddin Chowdhury, leader of SACHIP, a AL-rebel candidate with Eagle as Independent have been contesting.

In, Ctg-4 (Sitakunda) SM al Mamun is contesting with Boat symbol with other six party candidates and an Independent candidate Muhammad Imran with Eagle symbol. .

In Ctg-10 (Double Mooring-Pahartali), Mohiuddin Bacchu is in the election race on AL ticket. But former CCC Mayor Manjur Alam and Farid Mahmud of City AL unit are contesting from this seat among 9 contestants.

In Ctg-11 (Port-Patenga) MA Latif is contesting with AL ticket against Ziaul Huq Suman a leader of city AL unit and councillor of CCC who is contesting as Independent.

In Ctg-12 (Patiya), Motaherul Islam Chowdhury is in election race as AL nominee against the incumbent MP and Whip Shamsul Huq Chowdhury who is contesting as Independent candidate.

In Ctg-14 (Satkania-Chandanaish) Nazrul Islam Chowdhury of AL candidate is fighting against the Indeopendent candidate M Abdul Jabbaer Chowdhury of AL leader and former Upazila Chairman.
