Police arrested five people reportedly for their alleged involvement in torching polls stations at Gafargaon and Nandail upazilas in Mymensingh district early Saturday.
The arrested are --Ariful Islam, 24, a nightguard of Parshipara Government Primary School, designated as a poll centre, and his friend Sabbir, 24, both are residents of Gafargaon upazila; and Md Motiur Rahman Uzzal, 45, Md Sohel, 40, and Abdul Kaiyum Mojnu, 50, of Alalboxpur village under Nandail upazila, said police sources.
Masum Ahmed Bhuiyan, Superintendent of Police in Mymensingh, confirmed the matter on Saturday afternoon.
During primary questioning, the arrested persons confessed that they are activists of BNP and some central leaders gave them bribe to set fire on the polls stations, said the SP.
Investigation is on to arreste the other involved persons and legal action would be taken against them, added the SP.
Earlier, miscreants set fire to two polling stations in Nandail and Gafargaon upazilas of the district early Saturday in Mymensingh.
Deputy Commissioner of Mymensingh district and returning officer Dider-e-Alam Mohammad Maksud Chowdhury said unidentified miscreants et fire on Haripur Government Primary School in Nandail and Parshipara Government Primary School in Gafargaon upazila of the district early Saturday.
On information, firefighting units rushed to the spots and extinguished the fire.
