3 state ministers among minimum 14 AL MPs lose to independent candidates

Three state ministers have lost to their own party's independent candidates in the 12th parliamentary election.

Besides, one of the Awami League presidium members among several members of parliament (MPs) have lost to independent candidates.
Besides, minimum 11 existing MPs of Awami League have been defeated.

There are 23 ministers, 18 state ministers and 3 deputy ministers in the present cabinet. Except three among them, the rest got Awami League nomination in the 12th parliamentary election. Among them, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Md Mahbub Ali has lost to Barrister Syed Sayedul Huq Sumon, a known face on social media and former central leader of Jubo League. He defeated Mahbub Ali by some one lakh votes in Habiganj-4 (Madhabpur-Chunarughat) constituency.

Syed Sayedul Huq Sumon bagged 1,69,099 votes, while his nearest rival Mahbub Ali got 69,543 votes.

State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Swapan Bhattacharya could not win this time. He got defeated to independent candidate Yaqub Ali in Jashore-5 (Monirampur) constituency. Yaqub Ali with 'Eagle' symbol bagged 77,468 votes while Swapan Bhattacharya got 72,332 votes.

Awami League candidates State Minister for Relief and Disaster Management Enamur Rahman also got defeated in Dhaka-19 seat (Savar and a portion of Amin Bazar).

Besides, three state ministers did not receive the party's nomination in this year's election. They are State Minister KM Khalid, State Minister Begum Munnujan Sufian and State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Zakir Hossain. They did not take part in vote.

Important candidates lose elections

Boat candidate Kazi Zafar Ullah got defeated to independent candidate Mojibur Rahman (Nixon Chowdhury) in Faridpur-4 (Bhanga, Sadarpur and Char Bhadrashan) for the third consecutive time. Awami League presidium member Kazi Zafar Ullah was the co-chairman of Awami League Election Supervision Committee.

Awami League's cultural affairs secretary Asim Kumar Ukil MP got defeated in Netrakona-3 (Kendua-Atpara0 constituency. He got defeated to his own party's independent candidate former MP Iftikhar Uddin Talukder. Iftikhar Uddin bagged 76,803 votes while Asim Kumar Ukil got 74,550 votes.

Awami League candidate and present member of parliament Abdus Sobhan Mia (Golap) got defeated to indepnt candidate Tahmina Begum of Eagle symbol in Madaripur-3 (Sadar partial, Kalkini and Dasar) constituency. Tahmina got 96,633 votes while Golap received 61,971 votes. Golap is Awami League's publicity and publication secretary.

Awami League candidate Mrinal Kanti Das got defeated in Munshiganj-3 (Munshiganj Sadar-Gazaria) constituency. He is Awami League's liberation war affairs secretary. He got defeated to independent candidate Mohammad Faisal.

Awami League's heavyweight candidate Dhirendra Debnath Shamvu got defeated in Barguna-1 constituency (Sadar-Amtali-Taltoli). He was three times' elected MP. Independent candidate Golam Sarwar with 'Eagle symbol defeated Shamvu this time.

Singer Mamtaz Begum got defeated in Manikganj-2 constituency. She is an existing MP in this seat.
