Bangladesh Awami League, which secured absolute majority in the 12th national election held on Sunday, will hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on January 10 marking the Homecoming Day of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

While addressing a post-election press conference at the ALs Dhaka district office in Tejgaon on Monday, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader gave the announcement.

At a  press conference, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader criticized the BNP for its decision to boycott the election, and said that the it has no other choice but endure another five years till the next national elections.

"BNP-Jamaat has once again faced failure. The public has countered their plots through the ballots. With their repeated election boycotts, BNP is left with no option but to wait another five years," he added. In response to a query about the opposition party in 12th National Parliament, the AL General Secretary said, "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will decide the opposition party."

"A number of candidates from the existing opposition party, Jatiya Party, have won the election, along with two candidates from the 14-party alliance. The time to decide the next opposition party in parliament is not far.

It will become clear after the official announcement of the election results," Quader, also Road Transport and Bridges Minister, stated. The AL General Secretary said, "The new Prime Minister, the new leader of the house, will decide who will be the opposition party, considering the reality of the situation."

Responding to questions about the opposition party members, he said, "Why should I disclose the procedure? This is the new government. The Prime Minister will convene a meeting with those concerned and make decisions based on reality."

Addressing the independent candidates of ruling AL who won the election, he said, "The independent candidates of AL are the elected representatives of the people. They will sit in the parliament as MPs and perform their duties. Moreover, there is no time to think about anything else at the moment."

Taking a swipe at critics, Quader said, "Many commented that independents would win more seats than AL candidates. However, Awami League is Awami League. It is a positive reality that 223 candidates have won the election from the ruling party."
