SHARIATPUR, Jan 14: Unlicensed brickfields are damaging crops in Sadar Upazila of the district.

About 40 brickfields in six upazilas of the district are burning bricks having not environment certificates and valid licences.

These are allegedly burning wood in a rampant manner. Owners said, they have to use wood due to high cost coils.
Of these 40 brickfields, most are illegal.

These kilns have been set up in residential areas and on agricultural lands. Serious health hazard and environment pollution are reported.

Some owners are collecting top soil from agriculture fields. Local roads are damaged by soil-laden Mahindra vehicles.

MM Brick Field in Sirongal Village and another at Moktererchar in Naria Upazila, Haturia under Gosairhat Upazila, Berachaki  and Char Sensus under Bhedarganj Upazila, Kartikpur and Fotejongopur under Naria Upazila, Kazirhat area under Jajira Upazila  which were set up on river-side and agricultural lands, and most of them have no government approved 120 feet fixed  kilns
Mojid Miah, Mohon Miah and Shahid Dhali of Haturia Village in Gosairhat Upazila said, after setting-up of the bricks kilns in their village, they failed to cultivate their agriculture lands.

Md Abul Kashem,  Hossain Ali, Abdul Motaleb, Anower Bala and Siraz Miah, farmers of Norsinghapur Village in Bhedarganj Upazila, complained, they got half crops from the agricultural lands in the last year.

They complained it to the local administration, but no action has been taken against the illegal brickfields.

According to section-5 of the Brick Burning Act-1989, no licence would be given if a brickfield is set up within three kilometre of a residential area.

The act also enjoins that the brickfield owners use at least 120-foot fixed kiln for burning bricks. But most of the brickfield owners in the district are violating the act.

The brick kiln owners in collaboration with a section of dishonest officials are running their illegal brick business.

A recent visit found huge stocks of fuel wood in some brickfields in Haturia Village, Monohar Vazar, Kotapara Villages in Sadar Upazila and  Berachaki, Narsinghpur in  Bhedarganj Upazila, Kazirhat and Bilashpur in Janjira Upazila of the district.

According to sources at the Brickfield Association-Shariatpur, these illegal brickfield owners are yet to submit applications to the district administration for licence even after five years of running.

When contacted, Md Golam Mostafa, general secretary of District Brickfield Owners Association, said, "About all of the brickfields have valid licences so far I know."

He complained, low quality bricks are selling in different places of Shariatpur.

When contacted, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Nizam Uddin Ahammed said, district administration is observing it. Steps will be taken against the unlicenced brickfield owners if they are found guilty in inquiry, the DC added.
