BARISHAL, Jan 15: Barishal-Patuakhali regional road is getting eroded into the Pandob River at Jobai Union in Bakerganj Upazila of the district.

The regional road started collapsing at Pearpur Bazar Point near the Launchghat.

A visit on Saturday found the road linked with Patuakhali District via Dumki Upazila through several unions including Bakerganj Upazilas Choramoddi, Choradi Durdhol, Kobai, and Lonua via Barishal Kawarchar.

If the broken road is not repaired before the next rainy season, the transport movement in the road will come to close, locals said.

Locals said, vehicles like auto-rickshaw and motor cycle are committing accidents on the broken and narrowed road point.

Kobai Union Chairman Jahirul Islam Talukdar said, about one year back sand-laden geo-bags were dumped at the eroding point. But despite that the erosion can be stopped, he added.

Several thousand students of Kobai Technical School & College, Hanua Government Primary School, Motijan Secondary School, Dakkhin Shialguni Government Primary School, Pearpur Government Primary School, Laxmipasha Secondary School, and 20,000-30,000 people are using the road taking risks.

Executive Engineer of the Water Development Board-Barishal Md Rakib Hossain said, the regional road is under the Road & Highway Department (RHD). "We didn get either written or verbal complaint about this road. If the RHD wants, we will make cooperation. It is up to them to repair the road," he added.

RHD Engineer Masud Mahmud Suman said, in the case of stopping the erosion by the Pandob River, it needs to be built permanent embankment. No other repairing will work, he added.

He further said, but making new road will need land acquiring, a lengthy process.
