MEHERPUR, Jan 16: Thick fog along with gusty cold wind has paralysed public life in the district.

This biting cold has been prevailing in the district for the last seven days.

The sun is remaining invisible almost for the whole day. Normal activities are hampered.

Due to the cold and foggy weather, people are forced to stay at home. Business and official activities are halted. Day-labourers are working in an unbearable weather condition for earning livelihood.

There is no active Met office in Meherpur. But according to Met Office of neighbouring district, the days temperature varies between 9 and 11 degree Celsius in the region. Mercury fluctuation is continuing time to time.

The vehicular movement on the highway is thin. The poor and ultra poor people are worst sufferers. They lack warm clothes.

At present, people are thronging roadside old winter clothe shops. But prices of old clothes are higher than previous years.

Monirul Islam, a poor man of Amjhupi Village in Sadar Upazila, purchased old warm clothes for him and his family members from a makeshift shop in the cattle market. Prices are beyond his capacity, he said.

In some places of rural areas, the poor people were seen trying to mitigate pinching cold by making fire with straw.

Dr Hasibsus Sattar, superintendent of 250-Bed General Hospital-Meherpur, said, though cold wave is sweeping over the district, there is no alarming situation: the situation is still manageable.

Some children were admitted to the hospital with cold-related diseases that is also not alarming, he added.

Some private practitioners said, most of their patients are children and elderly people.

Sentient   people in the Gangni Upazila town said, the needy and distressed people of the district should be provided with the  warm clothes right now to save them from the severe cold and cold-related complexities.

Shamim Hasan, deputy commissioner (DC) said,  so far, 4,000 blankets have been distributed among the cold-hit people in the district through upazila nirbahi officers.

DC himself also distributed blankets among the cold-hit floating people at night.

More blankets will be collected, and these will be distributed, the DC added.
