Residential students of Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall at Dhaka University (DU) on Tuesday night took position in front of the hall and locked the offices of the Provost and House Tutors demanding to take necessary measures to solve seat crisis immediately.
Later on, the demonstrators marched to the Vice-Chancellors residence, following the sit-in programme.
Since the Sikder Manowara Bhaban of the hall was declared risky to live in, the administration of the concerned dormitory started transferring students from the building to the other buildings in the hall, which led to raise serious objection to the residents.
The students held a sit-in programme in front of the Vice-Chancellors residence in August last year with the same demand to move at least 300 residents of the Manowara Bhaban in other female halls. The then Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman assured the protesters of realizing their demand.
However, the protesters said the administration denied the assurance and was giving the students seats to the already filled up rooms in the hall, creating immense seat crisis.
"Now the hall administration is placing extra students in the six-person rooms forcibly. We already have a crisis of space in living rooms, reading rooms, library, intensified by the inadequate washrooms as well," said the protesters while talking to The Daily Observer.
Vice-Chancellor Prof ASM Maksud Kamal came out at night and assured the demonstrators of taking steps required to solve the seat crisis as soon as possible.
