Illegal hospitals, health-care centres flood Ukhiya

UKHIYA, COXS BAZAR, Jan 21: A number of hospitals, dental cares and diagnostic centres have grown up without licences in Ukhiya Upazila of the district.

Slipping administrative sighting, these illegal healthcare centres are providing treatment to people in different stations and haats and bazaars.

According to field sources, this malpractice in the name of treatment has been going on for a long time in the absence of monitoring.

Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Samanta Lal Sen gave instructions for closing unlicensed hospital, clinic, pathology lab and diagnostic centres. But these so-called healthcare offices are not closed down.
 
Sanitary Inspector of Upazila Health Department and Safe Food Inspector Nurul Alam said, according to the instruction by the authorities concerned, clinic, hospital and diagnostic centre are listed in Ukhiya, Coatbazar, Kutupalong Thaingkhali, Sonar Para and Maricha Station.

There are 27 hospital, diagnostic centre, pathology lab, clinic and dental care centre in Ukhiya Upazila. Of these, eight are diagnostic centres, but those also have no legal papers.

During a visit it was learnt, Coxs Bazar Dental Care at Coat Bazar; Ismail Dental Care, Mochha Dental Care, Bismilla Dental Care, and BK Dental Care at Balukhali; Seba Dental Care at Thaingkhali; Raihan Dental Care at Kutupalong and Farida Dental Care are not legally running.

Upazila Sanitary Inspector Nurul Alam confirmed this information.
 
These dental care centres are unlicensed and run by quacks without training, he said. Many patients died due to maltreatment, he added.
The visit found date-expired licences in many of these healthcare centres.

Local people demanded conducting drives to close the illegal health service centres to make people get rid of bad treatment.
