Law Minister Anisul Huq on Wednesday said the amendment bill of Labour Act would be passed in the next parliament session.

"It will definitely be brought up in the next session and passed as the meeting of the International Labour Organizations (IOLs) governing body will be held in March," the Law Minister came up with the development responding to a query from reporters about the possibility of passage of the amended act.

The Law Minister was talking to reporters after a meeting with the officials of the Labour Ministry at the secretariat.

The maiden session of the 12th parliament will be held on January 30.

"ILOs Governing Board meeting will be held in March. Todays meeting was for a briefing on the progress we are making and what we are doing over this Labour Act," said the Minister.

He also said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken responsibility of this Ministry. "This is a reflection of how seriously she has taken the Ministry. I will brief the Prime Minister in this regard first then I will tell you in details about it," he said.

Replying to a question regarding lowering the threshold of conditions required to form trade unions to 10 per cent, the Law Minister said, "We have discussed this today (Wednesday) as well. We are proceeding according to a decision. I have made a change as per the Prime Ministers earlier instructions, I will brief the Prime Minister about it very soon."

"We have discussed the issues regarding the progresses made in ensuring labour rights in the country and improvement of their working environments in the meeting. I will brief the Prime Minister about the subject matter of the meeting and then I may talk to you. I cannot give information about it without a talk with the Prime Minister," he said.

The Law Minister also said that a change was brought in line with a previous instruction from the Prime Minister.

Anisul said a radical change and improvement has taken place in the working environment in the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the last 11 years.

"Those who are now speaking about the present situation, should consider the situations of 2003, 2004 and 2005," he added.

Labour and Employment Secretary Md Ehsan-e-Elahi and Law and Justice Division Secretary Md Golam Sarwar, among others, were present at the meeting.
