NARAYANGANJ, Jan 26: A local leader of Juba League was reportedly beaten to death over a trifling matter in Sonargaon Upazila of the district on Thursday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Nazul Islam Bhuiyan, 40, an assistant secretary of Noagaon Union Unit of the Juba League under the upazila.
He was the son of late Shafed Ali Bhuiyan of the area.
Quoting Asma Aktar, wife of the deceased, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Taltala Police Outpost under Sonargaon Police Station (PS) said an altercation broke out between Nazrul and an auto-rickshaw driver Jakir Hossain and lineman Daiyan Mia after he got off the vehicle despite waiting for a long time as the rickshaw was not leaving the stand without fulfilling it with passengers.
At one stage, lineman Daiyan beat up Nazurl with his stick while driver Jakir accompanied by other drivers, leaving him injured critically.
Nazrul was then rescued and rushed to Araihazar Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physicians declared him dead upon arrival, the SI added.
Being informed, police recovered the body from the health complex.
Officer-in-Charge of Araihazar PS Ahsan Ullah confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.
