A local Jubo League leader was killed and eight others were injured in a clash between two rival groups at Meghna upazila in Cumilla district on Monday afternoon.
The clash broke out at around 2.30pm in Chalibanga union under the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Md Kamrul, 35, son of Abdur Rab, a resident of Chalibanga village. He was the president of Ward No-3 Jubo League under Chalibanga union.
According to locals, there had been a longstatnding disputes between the two groups over illegal sand business, extortion of money and establishing supremacy in the area. As sequel to it, the both groups locked into a fight in the afternoon, leaving nine people critically injured.
The injured were rescued and taken to several nearby hospitals in the area. Amon them, Kamrul was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital but he succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.
Meghna Police Station officer-in-charge Delwar Hossain said being informed, additional police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order and legal actions are underway in this regard.
