Visitors crowd Dhaka International Trade Fair

RUPGANJ, NARAYANGANJ, Jan 29: Surging number of visitors caused severe traffic jams along both sides of the road to Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) in Rupganj Upazila of the district on two holidays- Friday and Saturday.

In the first five days since the beginning, the 28th fair remained less crowded. But the public holiday, the first crowding made the fair premises vibrant.

Due to congested traffic condition elsewhere in the fair venue, buyers and visitors expressed anges. According to the fair sources, construction of stalls are yet to complete.
      
Local and foreign stalls have been decorated with luxurious and gorgeous items to attract customers-visitors, along with special discounts on various items.

A visit on 6th and 7th days (Friday and Saturday) found buyers and visitors coming to the fair since the morning. With the sun rising, queues of people started to get longer in the fair gate. In the afternoon, it was full brimming crowd of men, women and children.

Of all attractions, the first one was Dhanmondi-32 House on the fair premises. Huge customers and visitors were seen in clothe shops, food shops, pickle shops and ice-cream shops.

Fair-bound human waves created standstill traffic system on road sides. The traffic management was hiccupping to keep normal the situation. Many were seen getting down from cars and walking to the fair.

Makeshift public washrooms were dirty, having shortage of soaps, tissues or hand sanitizer.  
 
Savoy Icecream Stalls In-Charge Tahmid Hasan Toki said, "Sale is not only our purpose, but the publicity of our company. We have displayed about 15 foreign items keeping in head the demand of customers."

"We have special discount for customers and coupons, games and cards. Winners of these games get to eat ice creams free of cost. In overall accounts, we are getting good customers responses," they added.

Leasee of the fair gate and Director of Abdullah Enterprise Masum Chowdhury Apu said, in the beginning the fair experienced thin gathering of people; now day by day it is increasing; till Friday evening, about 70,000 tickets were sold while about 50,000 ones were sold till Saturday evening.

"We have appointed over 100 volunteers to ensure smooth entering without back-pushing and suffering," he added.

A sales representative of Joyeta Foundation  Fatema Aktar said, "Today we got good customers responses. Sales continued for almost whole day. Clothes of handicrafts, show-pieces and organic foods sold good."

In-Charge of Dhanmondi-32 House Nayan Mia said, after entering, visitors are firstly seeing Bangabandhus Dhanmondi-32 House; sitting here many are reading different books on life of Bangabandhu; some visitors are having selfie, and others are taking video.

A visitor from Agargaon in the capital Abdur Rahman said, "Because of job, I don get time for the fair. I am used to visiting the fair every year. Today (Saturday) I have come for the first time."

Another Kaykobad from capitals Abdullapur said, "Today is holiday. I stepped out in the afternoon with my family. It took us 18 minutes to reach Kanchanbridge from Kuril. But it took another about 20 minutes to reach the fair on 1.25 kilometre distance from the bridge. All other things are good."

Senior Assistant Superintendent of police in Narayanganj District Abir Hossain said, more than 100 police members are on duty to ensure security of customers-visitors.

Bibek Sarkar, secretary of Export Promotion Bureay and director of the fair, said, the total 351 local-foreign stalls have been allocated; restaurants, children parks and customers-visitors sitting have been arranged. To avoid fire incidents, members of different units of the Fire Services are working, he added.

The available items included electrical and electronics goods, industrial machineries, carpets, cosmetics & beauty aids, jute and jute goods, leather/artificial leather shoes and items, sports goods, sanitary wares, toys, stationary, crockery, plastics goods, melamine, herbal and toiletries, clocks, imitation jewellery, processed food, fast food, furniture, handicrafts, gift items, construction materials, home decors, and baked items.
