Cold-related diseases on the rise in Sirajganj

SIRAJGANJ, Jan 30: Pressure of cold disease patients has increased in hospitals in the district.

Dense fog and biting cold have almost jeopardised life in the district.

The mild cold wave has been flowing over the district for the last 10 days. People are getting affected by different diseases including pneumonia, diarrhoea, tough breath and sneezing. Children and elderly people are affected mostly.

Due to accommodation crisis in hospitals, patients are treated on floors and verandas.

Many are being treated on the floor of 250-Bed Bangamat Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital due to bed shortage.

A guardian of Pipul Baria in Sadar Upazila Hasan Imam said, he admitted his 11-month old baby Riad with diarrhoea recently. The baby was kept on the floor.

According to the hospital sources, in the last few days, more than 120 children were affected by different cold diseases.
In the Outdoor, at least 150 cold disease affected children are receiving treatment daily.

Supervisor of the hospital Dr Ratan Kumar Ray said, all treatment  facilities are available for cold disease patients. He advised keeping children warm. He also advised avoiding unhygienic food.

Assistant Lecturer of Shahid M Mansur Ali Medical College Hospital Dr Aminul Islam said, 20-30 affected children are admitted daily; over 100 others are being treated in the Outdoor.

Civil Surgeon (CS) Dr Rampad Ray confirmed increasing numbers of cold disease patients including children in both public and private hospitals in the district.

There is good treating facilities in government hospitals, the CS added.
