Police on Thursday night arrested the main accused in the killing of a village policeman, who was on-duty in a polling centre, at Baliakandi upazila in Rajbari district on Saturday (January 6) night.

Superintendent of Police in Rajbari GM Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the information in a press briefing in his office on Friday morning.

The arrested is Muktar Sheikh, 28, hailed from Jhaukati village under Madhukhali upazila in Faridpur district.

According to the press briefing, Muktar along with his two cohorts were trying to steal a goat from a house adjacent to Char Arcandi Government Primary School poll centre in the upazila, where the victim Ranjit Kumar, 40, was on-guard.

When the policeman obstructed them, the arrested and his two associates offered him some money as bribe, but the honest Ranjit denied their offer and tried to contact with police. At that time, the accused strangled the guard to death twisting his muffler around his neck, said GM Abul Kalam Azad in the briefing.

Later, the victim's wife Rita Dey lodged murder case with Baliakandi Police Station.

Following the case, the police department started investigating and they arrested the main accused on Thursday night. Police also recovered the autorickshaw, used in the killing and the goat which the accused had stolen from the house, he said.

During primary interrogation, Muktar Sheikh confessed to his crime, said the SP, adding that he also published the names of his associates and efforts are on to arrest the other accused.

Earlier, the village policeman was found dead behind a poll center in the upazila around 5am of January 6, one day before of the 12th National General Election.
