KAMALGANJ, MOULVIBAZAR, Feb 11: This winter season migratory birds are desperately killed in haor areas in Kamalganj Upazila of the district.

The poaching of the foreign birds is going on in full swing in eight small and big haors, mostly Hakaluki, Kawadighi, Haila Haor,  and Baikkya Beel.

With the beginning of the winter falling, the migratory birds started to come from highly winter-chilled countries including Siberia in quest of warmer places, food and habitats for breeding.

But numerous birds are being killed by trapping nets and poison bates.

There have been large scale of arrival of foreign birds in 273 small and big beels of Hakaluki and 10 rivers and many canals. These marshes are safe food reservoirs for them.

It was seen publicly trapping of birds in Kawadighi Haor by nets and poison bates.

On January 2, three photographers went to Hakaluki Haor part in Juri Upazila  to take pictures of  birds in Nagua and Chatla beels. Syed Abdul, Shanul Karim Chapal, and Md Rizwanul Karim came to see 32 dead ducks in Nagua Beel while one/two were agonizing to die. These were Pyang and Lenza species of duck.

A visit to Kawadighi Haor under Rajnaga Upazila found bird catching nets in Girim, Lama Mitupur, Dolia and Piala areas around that wetland.

Locals said, while coming to eat food at night, birds get trapped in these nets; in the morning, poachers free the trapped birds and sell.

Poachers in group are carrying out their bird catching by using poison bates and trapping nets.

Caught birds are selling very secretly at higher prices. But locals can protest the poachers as they are usually bad characteristics.

Leasee of Chatla Beel Habibur Rahman said, "I see less number of birds than past years in Hakaluki Haor. Many known birds are not seen."

When asked whether birds are available to purchase, one local said, "Prices of Hakaluki Haor are so high. Two ducks are sold at Tk 1,600. Some people make advance order for birds. If needed, you can make order. But you will have to come alone."

A member of Pakharia Wildlife Conservation Team Khorshed Alam said, according to the Wildlife Conservation Act-2012, it is punishable offence to kill, poach, sell and buy any wild animal.

But a bad circle is engaged in poaching migratory birds, he added.

Associate Professor (Community Medicine Department) of Patuakhali Medical College Dr Md Rizwanul Karim said, "I went to Hakaluki Haors Nagua and Chatla beels to see birds and take pictures. But we got stunned seeing dead birds in the beel."

Poison bates are causing irrecoverable damages to biodiversity while by consuming poison carrying bird meat, people are very likely to be affected by different  complicated diseases including kidney and liver diseases and cancer, he added.

The risk of diseases is very higher for old men, carrying women and children.

Divisional Forest Officer of the Department of Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Dr Mohammad Jahangir Alam said, "After drawing my attention of killing birds by poison bate, I raised the matter at the law and order meeting of the DC office."

"This poison is applied in agriculture. Now it is used in bird killing. Through inquiry, we are trying to bring them under law soon," he added.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dr Urmi Binte Salam said, "I have been informed of bird poaching, and local public representatives have also been informed about it at the district law and order affairs meeting."

"Soon after being informed of bird poaching in haor areas, we are conducting drive instantly," the DC added.
