A writ petition was filed with the High Court on Sunday seeking international standard investigation and compensation to the families of the 13 imprisoned BNP leaders who died in prison in the past few months.
BNP Legal Affairs Secretary Barrister Kaiser Kamal filed the petition with the related branch of the High Court on Sunday. After filing the petition, he told the media that the hearing on the petition is likely to take place at the High Court bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Atabullah. In the petition, he urged the HC to order prison authorities concerned to explain their positions about the deaths in the prisons.
Citing the petition, Kayser Kamal told journalists that thousands of people have been arrested in last few months as they ran movement for democracy and rule of law in the court.
There is no precedence of deaths of so many people inside the prisons in such a short period of time, he said, adding that those who died in custody were in sound health when they were detained. Kayser Kamal said hearing of the writ petition will be held when it will be included in the courts cause list.
Earlier on Friday, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi claimed in a press conference at Naya Paltan that torture in prisons is to blame for the death of 13 party leaders in the last three months. He said the news of the death of some BNP leaders and activists who are victims of brutal torture in custody is surfacing gradually. "Prison cells have been turned into concentration camps."
