A court in Bagerhat on Thursday sentenced eight operatives of banned militant outfit JBM to different terms of jail in a case filed 2016.
Additional Judicial Magistrate Dr Md Atikus Samad handed down the verdict on Thursday. The court also fined six operatives Tk 10,000 each.
The convicts are --Akash Molla, Md Kabirul Islam, Mizanur Rahman, Md Johirul Islam, Md Maksudur Rahman, Md Morshed, Md Siful Islam and Torikul Islam.
They are the residents in Bagerhat, Pirojpur and Satkhira districts.
Among the convicts -- Akash, Kabirul and Mizanur were sentenced to eight years jail while Maksudur and Morshed sentenced five years jail.
According to the prosecution, on October 25, 2016, police conducted a raid at an abandoned house in Kholishakhali area in Kachua Upazila after being informed that JMB men gathered there to carry out subversive activities.
Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the JMB operatives charged hand bombs at police and tried to flee but police in retaliation fired on them and arrested four on the spot.
During the drive police seized pistol, bullets, bomb making materials, computer hard disks and Jihadi books from their possession.
On May 11 in 2017, police pressed the charge sheet accusing the eight convicts.
