SEOUL, Feb 15: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test firing of a "new-type surface-to-sea missile", state media reported Thursday, part of a purported fresh drive to ramp up maritime border security.

So far this year, Kim has declared South Korea his countrys "principal enemy", jettisoned agencies dedicated to reunification and outreach, and threatened war over "even 0.001 mm" of territorial infringement.

Pyongyang has also doubled-down on weapons tests, including launching a string of cruise missiles, testing an "underwater nuclear weapon system", and firing a solid-fuelled hypersonic ballistic missile.

Seouls military said Wednesday that it had detected the launch of multiple cruise missiles by the North.    —AFP
