FENI, Feb 18: Bhasha Shahid Salam Library and Memorial Museum in Salamnagar Village in Daganbhuiyan Upazila of the district is lying and neglected.

This museum was established in 2008 to preserve memories of Salam who was martyred in the Language Movement.

There are about 3,000 books in 11 wardrobes in the library of the one-storey Bhaban. But readers are absent.

The library is not opened regularly except only in the month of February, month of the language.

In the museum, there is no other memorial thing except one picture of Shahid Salam.

Wardrobes are breaking down. Valuable books are lying scattered on table and floor. Some furniture broke.

A recent visit to the museum found its deplorable condition. One librarian and one caretaker have been appointed from Feni Zilla Parishad. But they are also passing idle time.

A local youth Kazi Iftekharul Alam said, the library of the museum is yet to gain momentum due to apathy and lack of initiative by the authorities concerned.

If different programmes such as education, awareness, literature, and debate are arranged on monthly basis, the library will become crowded, he added.

A mass media activist Shawkat Mahmud said, though the War of Liberation started through the Language Movement, the language-martyred families are not getting facilities like freedom-fighting families.

Brother of Shahid Salam Abdul Karim said, it is necessary to build a park along the Silunia River for visitors and readers to make the library and museum crowded.

Daganbhuiyan Upazila Chairman Didarul Kabir Ratan said, there is a pleasant environment beside the library and the river.

Upazila Parishad has a plan to raise a park in that place, he added.

Feni Zilla Parishad Khairul Bashar Mazumdar Tapon said, a project has been made for developing the library and the museum by repairing.

"We hope the repairing work will start soon," he added.

Family of Shahid Salam hope, the authorities will take necessary measures so that next generation could be engaged widely with the village of language-martyred Salam.
