Strikers hold Victorians despite Litons career best knock

Sylhet Strikers secured a nail-biting victory against defending champions Comilla Victorians in Mondays Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024 encounter at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.

Winning the toss, Sylhet Strikers elected to bat first and posted a respectable total of 177 runs for the loss of five wickets.

Kennar Lewis and Zakir Hasan provided a solid start for the Strikers contributing to a 40-run opening partnership before Zakir was dismissed for 18 runs. Lewis added 33 runs off 25 balls including two boundaries and two sixes.

However, Najmul Hossain Shanto fell short again with only 12 runs and Yasir Ali Rabbi managed just two. Skipper Mohammad Mithun and Englishman Benny Howell then anchored the innings with a crucial 77-run partnership with Mithun departing for 28 runs and Howell scoring a blistering 62 off 31 deliveries.

Howell struck the ball to the boundary six times and sent it over the ropes on four occasions. Ariful Haque remained unbeaten on seven off five balls.

Sunil Narine and Rishad Hossain claimed two wickets each for the Victorians, while Musfik Hasan picked up the remaining wicket.

Chasing 178 runs for victory, the Comilla Victorians lost their top-order batters Imrul Kayes and Tawhid Hridoy early, with Kayes scoring three and Hridoy adding 17 runs. Johnson Charles managed only 12 runs from 21 balls, while Moeen Ali departed for a duck putting the Victorians in a precarious position.

Skipper Liton Das conversely, showed aggression from the other end, scoring 85 runs off 58 balls including seven boundaries and three sixes.

Caribbean star Andre Russell failed to deliver his usual performance in need of the team, who remained unbeaten on 23 runs off 14 balls as the Victorians fell 12 runs short after the stipulated 20 overs. Zaker Ali was batting on seven off two balls.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib claimed three wickets for the Strikers, while Samit Patel, Shafiqul Islam and Howell took one wicket each.
Benny Howell of Sylhet Strikers was named the Player of the Match for his outstanding all-around performance.
