Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader addresses a press conference at AL president's Dhanmondi political office in the capital on Tuesday (February 20, 2024) afternoon.

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader has said that the government will not hinder peaceful programmes of BNP.

"But, there will be obstacles if elements of violence are added to the movement (of BNP)," he told a press conference at AL president's Dhanmondi political office in the capital on Tuesday (February 20, 2024) afternoon.

Quader, who is also the Road Transport and Bridges minister, said the government would not obstruct the BNP's peaceful programmes. But programmes would be obstructed if violent activities were added to its movement.

"Why will we impede them from holding peaceful programmes?" he asked.

About the ongoing political programmes of BNP, the AL general secretary said blaming the government is the main issue of the politics of the opposition in Bangladesh.

"They (BNP leaders) went to the United States to complain. BNP leader Moyeen Khan went to the US Embassy in Dhaka and complained that there is no human rights and democracy in the country. This is the situation of our main opposition political party," he said.

Questioning about the BNP's 54-party alliance, Quader said: "I want to know from the BNP leaders where are the partners of anti-government Oikya Jote? Where is their unity?"

Responding to the statements of BNP leaders on elections, he said everyone knows who won in the last general polls.

He said the BNP leaders are claiming that they have won in election without participating in it, which is nothing but a delirium.

Replying to a query about the recent internal clash of Chittagong University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Quader said necessary action is being taken to this end and the AL is thinking afresh.

The AL has decided to take stern actions to prevent the recurrence of such incidents within the party, he said.

AL organising secretaries BM Mozammel Huque, SM Kamal Hossain, Mirza Azam and Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan, were, among others, present at the press conference.
