Accident on Bangabandhu Expressway: Death toll rises to 5

The death toll from the accident on the Bangabandhu Expressway at Shibchar upazila in Madaripur district has risen to five after two more people succumbed to their injuries at a hospital.

Maruf Hossain, superintendent of Madaripur Highway Police, confirmed the matter.

Earlier, three people, including a woman and a child, were killed and 20 others injured after a bus hit a truck from behind on the expressway in Surja Nagar area at around 8:30 pm, Thursday.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Police and locals said a Barishal-bound bus of Hanif Enterprise suddenly hit a truck from behind, making the truck overturned and the bus twisted.

Three passengers of the bus died on the spot and at least 20 others were injured in the accident.

Eyewitness Ujjal Hossain said, "I came to here (Expressway) after suddenly hearing a loud sound. I saw the bus got twisted and the truck overturned. Three were killed and many injured."

Shamim Hossain, an injured bus passenger, said, "The bus was going to overtake the truck. And at that time, it hit the truck from behind. We could not understand what was happening in a quick succession of time."

Shibchar Highway Police Station officer-in-charge Md Shakil Ahammed said, "The speedy bus hit the truck after losing control. On information, we rushed to the spot and recovered three bodies. Many others were also injured in the accident. They were sent to nearby hospitals."
