Tobacco cultivation increases in Lalmonirhat

LALMONIRHAT, Feb 24: Tobacco cultivation on chars of the Teesta River is continuing to increase.

Local environment is threatened, and soil quality of croplands is being damaged.

Local sources said, crop cultivation is increasing day by day in chars. In the dry season, thousands of acre of char lands are brought under different crops. The fertility of chars is increasing yearly with accumulation of alluvium at the time of flood.

With increasing size of cultivable lands, farmers of Teesta banks are shifting to crop cultivation in chars.

 But most of these crops included tobacco.

A visit to remote chars found tobacco cultivated on three-cropping lands. Growers were seen cutting matured tobacco. Leaves were seen set for drying from the sun. Men, women and children were processing these.

Teesta chars are suitable for paddy, maize, potato, nut and vegetables. But about one-third of the total char lands has been brought under tobacco.

A tobacco grower of Anandabazar Village in Sadar Upazila Motleb Ali said, he has taken contact of one Donn land (28 decimal land) at Tk 4,000 for one season for tobacco cultivation. His tobacco cultivation has been easier as he got incentives of fertiliser, seeds and insecticide from British Tobacco Company. This company has given him incentives for cultivating tobacco on one acre of land. The company purchases his dried tobacco leaves at fixed price.

A farmer of Chinatuli area at Rajpur Union Hakim Mia said, along with maize and nut, he has cultivated tobacco on over one acre land. He has already finished cutting of his tobacco. Men and women labourers have been working in his farm since the beginning of the season at wages of Tk 350 and Tk 250 respectively per day.

He said, these char lands are cultivable for one time in a year. Later on, these lands remain under water, he added.

He further said, on some lands, tobacco is cultivated after paddy lifting.

Grower Afiar of Milon Bazar area at Khuniagachh area said, his tobacco plants are yet to be matured. But old leaves are lifted by daily labourers, and these are set for drying from the sun. He is irrigating his tobacco field.

Hoping higher profits, he has cultivated tobacco along with potato.

Deputy Director (Acting) of the Department of Agriculture-Lalmonirhat  Sayeda Sifar Jahan confirmed increased tobacco cultivation in the entire district compared to last years.

She said, "We are trying to discourage tobacco cultivation. At the same time, farmers are inspired to cultivate high-value crops."
