Visually impaired aspirants misuse loopholes in JU entry tests

Several visually impaired admission aspirants misused loopholes in the admission test of Jahangirnagar University in academic session 2023-24.

The matter surfaced after detaining Shagor Hossain alias Rohan who was appearing in a C unit exam as a proxy of a stenographer of a visually impaired aspirant Md Tutul Hasan by allegedly changing the photo of the  stenographer.

Tutul attended the test at Room no. 130 of the Social Sciences faculty building on the fifth shift of Sunday.

The on-duty invigilator noticed the matter and asked the proctorial body along with security officials to take Rohan and Tutul in their custody for interrogation.

In the custody of the proctorial body, the detainees disclosed the involvement of five admission aspirants and three JU students in  changing the photograph the stenographer.

The admission aspirants are - Md Delowar Hossain (C-3111583), Raju Ahmed (C-3104117 and E-5121433), Md Tutul Hasan (C-3105936), Md Mehedi Hasan (C-3102533 and B-2101193) and Awal Hossain Arafat (C-3107589 and B-2103572).

The accused JU students are - Md Mahmudul Hasan Shawon, a visually impaired student of the International Relations Department and  Md Al Mamun of the Bangabandhu Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture. Both are JU students in the academic session 2020-21.

The other accused, Jahidul Islam, is a visually impaired student of the History Department in  the academic session 2021-22.

According to the proctorial body, during interrogatio0n the detainees termed the process of authorising stenographers of the deans and directors offices for the visually impaired admission aspirants as huge loopholes.

During interrogation, all of them confessed their involvement with the wrong doing.

The university administration cancelled candidature of the five admission seekers.

Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Ashulia Circle Md Ashrafur Rahman who conducted the mobile court on Sunday night, said, "Accused Shagor Hossain alias Rohan has been sentenced to one years simple imprisonment and a fine of Tk 200 under the Public Examinations (offense) Act 1980."

Shagor Hossain alias Rohan said that he is a 3rd year student of the History Department of Dhaka College in academic session 2020-21. He comes from Kaliganj, Jhenaidah and is son of Liton Ali.

Sajid Hasan, an admission aspirant of C unit, has been accused of assaulting an on-duty Rover Scout member. The university administration also cancelled his candidature.

JU Proctor ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan said, "We revoked the candidature of six admission aspirants who were involved in forgery. A total of five candidates changed their authorized stenographers photographs on the application form and another one was involved in assaulting an on-duty Rover Scout member. All of them are visually disabled except the one accused of assaulting the Rover-Scout member."

"Shagor Hossain was handed over to the police  by the executive magistrate," he added.

He said that the action will be taken against the university students involved in forgery under  the existing students disciplinary ordinance.
