10 get death, 8 life-term jail for Cumilla Jubo League leader murder

A court in Cumilla has sentenced 10 accused to death and other eight accused to life-term prison for hacking Jubo League leader Jahangir Hossain to death in sequel to previous enmity at Monohorganj in the district.

At the same time, the court fined each of the accused Tk 10,000.
Mosammat Mariam Moon Munjuri, judge of the Special Sessions Judge Court in Cumilla, pronounced the judgement on Thursday afternoon.

Though eight life-term convicts, out of a total of 18 convicts, were present on the dock during the pronouncement of the judgement, 10 convicts receiving death sentences have remained absconding.

Those who have received death sentences are Tajul Islam's three sons -- Md Riad Hossain, 29, Mir Hossain, 37, and Anwar Hossain, 41; Shamsul Huq Patwari's two sons -- Md Yusuf, 36, and Md Ismail Hossain, 35; Saleh Ahmed's son Mishu, 22; Shahid Ullah Member's son Md Rajon, 31; Tajul Islam's son Manik Mia, 31; Abul Hossain's son Md Mizanur Rahman, 24, and late Sultan Ahmed's son Md Rashed, 22; of village Dakkhin Batabaria under Monororganj in Cumilla.

Those who were sentenced to life imprisonment are Tajul Islam's son Noman, 23, Sirajul Islam's son, Salahuddin, 41, Haji Abdus Samad's son Abul Kashem alias Picchi Kashem, 42, Moulvi Ali Akbar's son Md Shahgid Ullah Member, 55, Noor Ahmad's two sons md Saleh Ahmad, 32, and Md Sohag, 26, late Shafiqur Rahman's son Md Swapan, 35, and late Mantajur Rahman's son Md Tipu, 35.

The case statement reads that at about 9:00am on May 13, 2016, the accused launched an attack on the house of Jubo League leader Jahangir Alam at village Dakkhin Batabaria under Monororganj in Cumilla district in a pre-planned way in sequel to previous enmity.

The accused killed Jahangir using chapatis and Chinese axes.

Later, Jahangir Alam's elder brother Md Alamgir Hossain filed a murder case at Monohorganj Police Station accusing 20 persons.

Investigation officer of the case and Monohorganj Police Station's sub-inspector Md Nasir Uddin submitted report against the accused to the court on June 8, 2017. The charge in the case was framed on October 13, 2019. After recording the depositions of 12 witnesses and hearing arguments, allegations against the accused were proved and the court on Thursday pronounced the judgement.

Public Prosecutor Md Mobarak Hossain expressed his satisfaction over the judgement.
