In the first of the three-match bilateral T20i series against visiting Sri Lanka at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Monday, Bangladesh suffered a narrow 3-run defeat despite sublime fifties from Mahmudullah Riyad and debutant Jaker Ali.

Bangladesh won the toss and surprisingly opted to bowl first on a batting paradise, with five specialist batters and a debutant in the playing eleven, inviting Sri Lanka to bat. Man in-form Shoriful Islam provided Bangladesh with an early breakthrough by dismissing Lankan opener Avishka Fernando. The first ball of the innings kissed the bat and reached the boundary from a slipping position, while the second ball also touched the edge of the bat and nestled in wicketkeeper Liton Dass gloves. Taskin Ahmed also joined the party sending Kamindu Mendis to the sideline, who departed on 19 off 14 balls.

However, Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama not only steadied the ship but also began to swing the bat wildly to accelerate the run rate forming a 96-run partnership for the third wicket before Kusals dismissal for a stormy 59 off 36 balls including six boundaries and three sixes. Samarawickrama, who started slowly, shifted gears after Kusals departure and remained unbeaten on 61 off 48 balls with eight boundaries and a six, while skipper Charith Asalanka was not out on a stormy 44 off 21 balls hitting six sixes as Sri Lanka posted an enormous total of 206 runs for the loss of three wickets.

Shoriful, Taskin and Rishad Hossain shared the wickets for Bangladesh.

In pursuit of 207 runs, Bangladesh lost their opener Liton early failing to score anything on the board. Soumya Sarkar and Towhid Hridoy followed Liton cheaply for 12 and eight runs respectively putting Bangladesh in a precarious position. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto worsened the situation with a 20-run knock from 22 balls.

Mahmudullah however, started to unleash his strokes before getting out on 54 off 31 balls, with two boundary-kissing shots and four maximums. It was the 7th T20i fifty for the veteran. Conversely, Jaker brought Bangladesh close to victory before returning to the dugout scoring 68 off 34 balls including four fours and six sixes, while Sheikh Mahadi scored 16 runs as Bangladesh finished on 203 for eight in the stipulated 20 overs.

Bangladesh were in need of 12 runs to win in the last over. Dasun Shanaka took two wickets, conceding eight runs to confirm Sri Lankas victory.

Apart from Shanaka, Angelo Mathews claimed two wickets, while Matheesha Pathirana, Maheesh Theekshana and Binura Fernando shared one wicket each.
