In the light of the Disciplinary Boards recommendation, the Dhaka University (DU) authorities have sacked Md Shamim Hossain, a token man at the universitys Proctor Office, for extorting a hefty amount of money from over 300 makeshift shops installed illegally at different points on the campus.

The decision was made at the Syndicate meeting held on Sunday with Vice-Chancellor Prof ASM Maksud Kamal in the chair.

Pro-VC (Academic) Prof Sitesh Chandra Bachar confirmed the matter to The Daily Observer.

Following a report published on The Daily Observer on February 26 last year, the university authorities evicted all floating shops from the campus and formed a three-member probe committee to investigate the allegation of extortion against a section of the universitys Proctorial Mobile Team.

The probe body found Shamim, leading the party to extort from the campus shops and six current and former members of the Proctorial Mobile Team -- Kishan Chandra Das, Amit Sarker, Sri Sudarshan Halder, Md Masum Sheikh, Md Rafique Gazi and Md Mithu Mir - assisting the kingpin.

Later on, the university authorities suspended Shamim and issued separate show cause notices to the other six members asking them to explain as to why they should not be punished.

Talking to The Daily Observer, Proctor Prof M Maksudur Rahman said the university administration has announced zero tolerance against such irregularities.

"We are driving raids regularly and no unauthorised shops will be allowed on the campus," Prof Maksud said.
