The investigation committee, assigned to search the flats allocated to officers and employees of Dhaka University (DU) for illegal occupants, has submitted the probe report.
Prof Liton Kumar Saha, chief of the investigation committee, also an Assistant Proctor of the university, confirmed the matter to The Daily Observer on Wednesday.
Prof Liton said they submitted the report on February 29 after raiding the flats at different residential areas of the university including the North Nilkhet, South Nilkhet, Bangabandhu Tower, Sheikh Russell Tower and Azimpur.
Prof Liton said they found authenticity of the matter as a considerable number of the officers and employees let out their flats to outsiders, breaching the agreement with the university administration signed during the allocation of the apartments.
"Now its in the hands of the university administration and they will take the next step," Prof Liton said.
Vice-Chancellor Prof ASM Maksud Kamal said he received the report.
A syndicate member told this correspondent that the report was also discussed in the last syndicate meeting held on March 3 but the Syndicate, the highest policy-making forum of the university, did not act upon its recommendations immediately.
Asked about this, Prof Kamal said the final decision will be taken as per the university rules in the next syndicate meeting.
"Im taking some more time and waiting for a further comprehensive report," Prof Kamal added, emphasizing his firmness to chastise the wrongdoers.
According to the sources at different residential areas, the investigation committee raided some 530 flats out of over 900 staff flats.
So far, the committee found at least 50 entire flats rented out to outsiders while some 200 flats are shared partially with sublet tenants, said the sources.
They added that at least in 150 flats, one room was let out to strangers while outsiders are accommodated in two rooms in at least 60 flats.
An investigative report published on The Daily Observer on February 23 showed that a large number of flats allocated to the officers and employees of the university were illegally let out to strangers entirely while over 200 others accommodated sublet tenants in their flats to earn a hefty amount of extra money.
Estate office of the university particularly looks into the allocation of the flats.
When the irregularities came into the limelight, many officers and employees opened their mouths and claimed all this happened due to the indulgence of acting estate manager Fatema Binte Mustafa.
"She knew everything about what was going on in the residential areas but she wore a pair of wooden glasses on her eyes. Later on, she could not help raiding the flats as the current Vice-Chancellor has strictly instructed her and the team to raid the flats," said an officer of the university, seeking anonymity.
However, Fatema refused to comment on the allegations against her either over phone or in person in her office.
